The city of Ostrava, traditionally dominated by heavy industry, has now become an incubator of technological ideas that have the ambition to transcend the borders of the Czech Republic. A lot of people may be surprised by the fact that today in the city, the same number of people work in IT as in the metallurgical industry. More importantly, computer science is moving towards industrial applications, Industry 4.0, which is a great opportunity for the region to digitize its industry.

A lively, modern multi-purpose centre has been gradually emerging in the Nová Karolina area since 2008. In the residential complex building F is now undergoing final works before its final inspection in September. There are last few available apartments left for sale.

TBEX Europe Ostrava has kicked off. It is the world's largest gathering of bloggers, vloggers, content creators and travel professionals active in the social media. Ostrava is the first city in Central Europe to host this conference.

An extension of former municipal slaughterhouse from the 1930s will become the seat of a creative international cultural centre. The new creative cultural centre with an area of more than 5 thousand m2 will include lecture halls, a dance area, theatre space, a catering facility as well as accommodation for artists.

Besides standard single-journey or time-valid tickets, all of Ostrava's public transport vehicles accept standard contactless bank cards. This makes it considerably easier for passengers to use the system, and it has boosted the number of users (including visitors to Ostrava).

The renovation of the space between Komerční banka and Prosperita Palace near Elektra tram stop is finished. New granite tiles, special lighting, new trees, street furniture and pillars for artwork are all in their places.

More than 180 speakers from 25 countries around the world will be part of the third edition of the international Meltingpot discussion forum, which will take place from July 18-21 at the Colours of Ostrava festival in the industrial area of Dolni Vítkovice. There will be the personalities of many fields of human thinking – from politics, culture, science, education, travel, economics to personal development.

The City of Ostrava will repair the premises of historic slaughterhouse in Ostrava. The neglected premises will be transformed into a modern art gallery after reconstruction. The city invited architectural tenders for its reconstruction and a Polish architectural studio, KWK Promes, owned by the architect Robert Konieczny, is preparing the project documentation. The slaughterhouse extensions will be converted into an international cultural centre.

VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava is preparing a major change – it has decided to move its Faculty of Economics from the City Centre to the Poruba campus.

This year, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia. This important historical jubilee is connected with 28 October 1918, when an independent Czechoslovak state was proclaimed. For the Czech Republic, this day is a public holiday and an occasion for celebrations and memorial events. A year-long project to honour this anniversary was also proclaimed by the City of Ostrava. It includes exhibitions, concerts, and lectures, events for children and adults, and publications.

The members of the Ostrava City Assembly approved the plan to sell the land in Hrušov owned by the City. Last September, the City invited prospective buyers to submit their offers for an investment project in the Hrušov development zone. Four offers were received by April 30. The City Assembly also determined the ranking of the prospective buyers, and the City will negotiate the sale of the land with these prospective buyers in that order.

The neurosurgical department of the Ostrava City Hospital started using the new Zeiss Kinevo 900 – a robotic visualization system that replaces the current operating microscope. It is currently the most advanced visualization system on the market used in neurosurgical operations, the first device of its kind in the Czech Republic.
