Fourteen of the world’s top twenty women tennis players will be coming to Ostrava in October for a WTA tournament – the Ostrava Open.

The first national museum to set up a branch in Ostrava is the National Museum of Agriculture in Lower Vítkovice. The new branch was opened to the public on Thursday 17 September.

A new emergency measure (no. 15/2020) in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic now applies to the entire territory of the Moravian-Silesian Region. The new measure again makes it compulsory to wear mouth and nose coverings in all indoor spaces, in public transport, and in motor vehicles (including taxis and employee buses).

A unique plot of land in the heart of Ostrava next to 28. října St. – a plot known as the “Ostrava Teardrop” because of its shape – is being sold by the City to an Ostrava-based company which plans to build a commercial and office development incorporating a hotel and apartments. 

The deadline for submitting offers is 31 July 2020 for both sites.

Financial donations of up to 100 000 CZK are available to applicants who run a business in Ostrava (or who have a business with its registered address and the majority of its activities in Ostrava) if their annual income is below 18 million CZK. Applications can be submitted between 1 May and 13 May.

The Czech government has announced a state of emergency which came into effect on 12 March 2020 and will last until 30 April. Movement of persons is limited throughout the country. The borders of the Czech Republic are closed. Most markets are closed, retail sales are also restricted.

The first vending machines selling face masks and other protective medical items were installed in Ostrava. On Tuesday the machines were stocked up with face masks, single-use sterile gloves, and disinfectant gels. They are available to the public at 21 locations throughout the city.

Postponing rent due date, remission of rent, fast financial aid up to CZK 20 000 or a grant programme up to CZK 100 000. These are the possibilities the City of Ostrava is now preparing for small entrepreneurs who cannot carry out their business activities as the consequence of the government emergency measures related to COVID-19.

This legally protected cultural heritage site will undergo a complete reconstruction to a design by the Polish studio KWK Promes, headed by architect Robert Konieczny.

International rating agency Moody's has increased the City of Ostrava's rating for the fourth year in a row. The City now has its higher ever rating: Aa3/stable. Again Ostrava has achieved the highest rating available to it, equal to the Czech Republic's rating.

The Moravian-Silesian Region, Statutory City of Ostrava, the Railway Administration Authority (SŽDC), Concens Investments and Antwerp Port Authority will cooperate in developing a new container terminal in the strategic Mošnov industrial zone. On September 18, 2019 they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to start this new project, called the Mosnov Multimodal Transport Terminal.

The Ostrava Public Transport Company (DPO) unveiled the design of its new Škoda ForCity Smart trams, which will be deployed in Ostrava next autumn. Ostrava will be the first city in the Czech Republic and Central Europe to have Škoda ForCity Smart trams in operation.

Dolní Vítkovice is one of the biggest tourist attractions not only in the Moravian-Silesian Region, but also in the whole Czech Republic. Now a new tour has been opened. Visitors can see the local Coking Plant and learn how iron is made.
