18/9 2025

On 28 September 2025, Ostrava will celebrate Czech Statehood Day with its traditional Open Day at the New City Hall, offering a rich program for visitors both inside the historic building and on Prokeš Square in front of it. The afternoon, running from 2 to 6 p.m., will carry a nostalgic post-war theme.

Visitors can look forward to the always-popular guided tours, including access to normally closed areas of the country’s largest city hall complex, a national cultural monument. Along the way, participants will encounter costumed historical figures, and each tour will end in the mayor’s office, where today’s Mayor Jan Dohnal will greet guests. Admission is free, with online registration available here.

The City Hall foyer will host a retro fashion show spanning styles from the First Republic through the 1950s. A recreated 1930s–40s post office, period jokes and recipes, and even a recruitment commission of the restored Czechoslovak army will bring history to life. As always, visitors will also have the chance to ride up the New City Hall tower—the tallest city hall tower in the country—and enjoy sweeping views of Ostrava and its surroundings.

On Prokeš Square, guests can enjoy live music by DJ Zeppelin with saxophone accompaniment, a charming historical café, and a family-friendly labyrinth. An exhibition of historic bicycles will be on display, and the bravest can even try riding a penny-farthing. Soldiers and gendarmes from the post-war era will be on hand near an army jeep, while Ostrava’s leisure centers will offer creative activities especially for children. The city’s Department of Social Affairs and Health will also present its work, alongside the family-oriented campaign “Give Children a Family.” Refreshments will be available at food stalls throughout the square.

The highlight of the evening will be the official unveiling of the New City Hall’s new illumination at 7 p.m. A dynamic light show will present a variety of color combinations, each displayed for 30 seconds in a repeating cycle. The public will then be able to vote for their favorite lighting design via the official Facebook page of the City of Ostrava, with voting open from 21 September 2025.

The Open Day at the New City Hall promises a unique experience for the whole family—an ideal way to spend the last Sunday of September.
