Ostrava University Hospital has completed a full reconstruction of its Department of Dentistry. From September, the newly renovated premises on the second floor of the Polyclinic will also be used by students of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ostrava. For the city of Ostrava, which has long supported the study of dentistry in the Moravian-Silesian metropolis, this is welcome news.

Most of the new teaching surgeries are equipped with two fully functional dental units, enabling students to work alongside experienced dentists in the same room. The nine-month construction project transformed former private dental offices into modern teaching spaces, all fitted with high-frequency intraoral X-ray units. One of the chairs, like the entire unit, can be rotated for both right- and left-handed users.

„The Faculty of Medicine now has state-of-the-art facilities for teaching dentistry, and with this reconstruction, the same can be said for Ostrava University Hospital,” said Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Rastislav Maďar. „Thanks to the timely completion, our very first class of dentistry students—now in their third year—will be able to start their practical training here right away. Maintaining accreditation for dental education depends on close cooperation between our institutions, and this project shows how well that works.”

The department, which previously treated mainly hospitalised patients in urgent need of dental care, will now also accept around 1,000 patients annually, including children. Registration will open in September via an online form on the hospital’s website. The facility includes five surgeries with eight dental chairs (one dedicated to orthodontics), a patient call system, CCTV, medical records facilities, and staff areas. The reconstruction cost almost CZK 20 million (excluding VAT), with dental equipment such as chairs, units, lamps, mixers, and scanners adding a further CZK 6.7 million.

The statutory city of Ostrava continues to actively support dental education. Between 2025 and 2030, it will contribute CZK 21.7 million to the Faculty of Medicine’s dentistry programme, in six instalments. This builds on an earlier contribution of CZK 14.3 million provided between 2022 and 2024 to help establish the study programme and improve access to dental care in the city.
