Railway transport

Ostrava has got five railway stations. The most important, Ostrava-Svinov, has recently been modernised. The Ostrava Main Station is situated in the City district of Přívoz. It was first put into operation in 1976. Both railway stations are also home to the branches of the Ostrava City Information Centre, where you can find everything you need to know about the city and its surroundings.

Other stations include Ostrava-Centre, Ostrava-Vítkovice, and Ostrava-Kunčice. Ostrava-Svinov is also linked to the Opava line, and Ostrava-Centre to the Frýdek-Místek line and the Beskydy Mountains. Since the end of 2007 a new railway stop has been uder operatino close to the Stodolní street in the city centre. It markedly speeds up the transport to the Havířov line. The other two railway stops - Ostrava-Třebovice and Polanka nad Odrou serve smaller lines.

Since 2005 the city is served by the Pendolino, the Czech Republic’s high speed passenger train system. There are six trains daily in each direction, lasting roughly 3 hours, and are scheduled in coordination with Czech Airlines flights from Prague.

The car rental company Hertz and Czech Railways entered into partnership on 15.6.2009. Hertz now enables customers to select a rental vehicle and have it brought to the Ostrava Main Train Station or the Ostrava-Svinov Station. Customers may order the vehicle via the telephone number +420 225 345 000 or the Internet; the link to the reservation form is at the Website www.cd.cz or www.pendolino.cd.cz. The customer then leaves the train at the station and heads to the Hertz designated meeting point, where a driver will be waiting to hand over the keys to the selected vehicle.
