The city of Ostrava plans to operate with a budget of 14.476 billion crowns in 2025. Of this amount, 4.976 billion crowns (34.4 %) is earmarked for investments.

This beautifully decorated Christmas tram, operated by the Ostrava City Transport Company (DPO), is sure to delight the citizens of Ostrava this year.

The Archimedes Outdoor Classroom was established this year at the Primary School in Ostrava-Radvanice, making it the first of its kind in the Moravian-Silesian Region. This facility offers a unique environment for ecological education and other activities, equipped with modern technologies, including educational 3D software.

This year, as part of the preventive project "Safer Ostrava," the traditional activity titled "Safer Shopping, Parking, and Travel" has been prepared once more. Ostrava is continuously working on enhancing its entire waste management system. The city has established a network of public collection points for sorted waste (paper, glass, and plastic, including beverage cartons and metal packaging). 

On Sunday, November 17th, students from the University of Ostrava (OU) and the VŠB — Technical University of Ostrava (VŠB-TUO) organized another anniversary of the memorial event titled "Journey to the Light." This occasion, held with the support of the statutory city of Ostrava, commemorated the anniversaries of the events of 1939 and 1989.

The statutory city of Ostrava has approved the terms and conditions for the architectural competition aimed at selecting the design proposal for the FC Baník Ostrava football stadium at Bazaly. Proposals from potential contractors must comply with all current UEFA criteria for hosting international matches across all football categories, including national team games.

The construction of the new concert hall, which combines the reconstruction of the heritage-protected House of Culture of the city of Ostrava with the timeless new construction of the concert hall and the use of the most modern green technology, has indeed reached a historical milestone. On July 19, 2024, a symbolic laying of the foundation stone for this unique construction took place with the participation of the President of the republic Petr Pavel, mayor of Ostrava Jan Dohnal, governor Josef Bělica, distinguished world architect Steven Holl, and other city and state representatives.

Another significant milestone in Ostrava’s architecture is the rescue of the iconic "skyscraper" on Ostrčilova Street. The building will undergo a comprehensive reconstruction under the direction of world-renowned architect Eva Jiřičná.

Ostrava has been supporting the education of talented people, who participate in the development of not only the city, for a long time. It is no different for the Moonshot Young Leaders Camp event, when the city will welcome the participants of the camp on 16^th July.

Ostrava will once again welcome the world's leading architect Steven Holl, who is returning to the prepared area of the reconstructed House of Culture of the City of Ostrava after almost three years. This time he will take on a special task. Together with other celebrities, he will tap the foundation stone of the concert hall. 

The conversion of Ostrava’s 19th-century slaughterhouse to become the home of the PLATO contemporary art gallery has been ranked among the top five finalists in the EU’s Mies van der Rohe Award for contemporary architecture. The project faced challenging competition from 362 other buildings all over Europe, and it is the first-ever Czech building to reach this stage of the competition.

Three men – Vladimír Tomčák (a member of the public), Tomáš Zevel (a National Police Force officer) and Petr Komoň (a City Police Force officer) – have been recognized for their role in saving a man’s life. It is thanks to them that a 19-year-old student was rescued from drowning after having been taken suddenly ill at a swimming pool.

Ostrava has a new strategic plan. It has selected key topics to focus on and develop in the coming years until 2030. The plan's priorities include quality housing and architecture, energy, and fulfilling the role of a metropolis, among others.
