The Continental Cup, the third largest athletics competition after the Olympic Games and the World Cup, will be held in Ostrava on 8 and 9 September. The best of the world’s athletes will be competing in Ostrava for two days. The Continental Cup is a reward for our city for the successful organization of sports events such as the World Ice Hockey Championship, the European Table Tennis Championship, the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup, the Golden Spike and more.
Change the streets, complete the squares or parks and other public spaces according to their own ideas - such a possibility has been offered to active citizens or non-profit organizations by a subsidy programme for the revitalization of public space in the city.
This year, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia. This important historical jubilee is connected with 28 October 1918, when an independent Czechoslovak state was proclaimed. For the Czech Republic, this day is a public holiday and an occasion for celebrations and memorial events. A year-long project to honour this anniversary was also proclaimed by the City of Ostrava. It includes exhibitions, concerts, and lectures, events for children and adults, and publications.
More than 180 speakers from 25 countries around the world will be part of the third edition of the international Meltingpot discussion forum, which will take place from July 18-21 at the Colours of Ostrava festival in the industrial area of Dolni Vítkovice. There will be the personalities of many fields of human thinking – from politics, culture, science, education, travel, economics to personal development.

The members of the Ostrava City Assembly approved the plan to sell the land in Hrušov owned by the City. Last September, the City invited prospective buyers to submit their offers for an investment project in the Hrušov development zone. Four offers were received by April 30. The City Assembly also determined the ranking of the prospective buyers, and the City will negotiate the sale of the land with these prospective buyers in that order.
At the end of May, there were 14,097 people in the Ostrava contact point register. There were 1,515 job seekers in May. The share of unemployed persons reached 6% in Ostrava. The Moravian-Silesian Region has ranked first in terms of the share of unemployed persons compared to other regions of the Czech Republic.

The neurosurgical department of the Ostrava City Hospital started using the new Zeiss Kinevo 900 – a robotic visualization system that replaces the current operating microscope. It is currently the most advanced visualization system on the market used in neurosurgical operations, the first device of its kind in the Czech Republic.
A new multimodal logistics centre outside the Ostrava Airport can become an important transshipment terminal of the "New Silk Road" Concens Investments is building a giant Ostrava Airport Multimodal Park in the immediate vicinity of Mošnov Airport, investing several billions of korunas.
Ostravians are one of the most frequent users of the bikesharing system. The Ostravians have fallen in love with the pink bikes. Every bicycle is rented on average by six cyclists a day. There are 45 places in Ostrava where people can rent and return the bikes. The cyclists most often use the bikes for short trips in the city centre.
If we disregard the large industrial zone, the City district of Hrabová consists of three parts. Although the residential estate has its own square, we can hardly refer to it as the centre of the City district. Hrabová simply has and never had its centre. And that's about to change.
At the beginning of the holidays, Ostrava will inaugurate the new part of the in-line centre "Cementárna". It is an expansion of the first phase opened in September 2014. It will include 1,600 meters of track, tennis courts, a skate park, parkour training grounds and a pumptrack. The project involved the renovation of roads and pavements, and an expansion of the parking lot built in the first stage. Added were resting places with benches, bicycle stands and trash cans. The opening ceremony is scheduled for Friday 29 June.
