Ostrava Expands Its Cycling Infrastructure

11/8 2025

Cycling enthusiasts in Ostrava can now enjoy 307 km of marked cycle paths and routes (as of 31 December 2024), with the network growing every year through new construction and repairs to existing paths. The city’s goal is to create a direct, connected, attractive and safe cycling infrastructure for all users.

This year, the city expects to complete the 6.4 km S/M route between Mečníkovova and Žákovská streets, linking four city districts. New cycle paths are also being built in Radvanice and Bartovice, and cycling will be integrated into the reconstruction of Přemyslovců Street. Planned projects include extending the path along 17. listopadu Street near Ostrava University Hospital and renovating the footbridge over the Ondřejnice River on the international EuroVelo 4 route.

The Mečníkovova–Žákovská project has already involved the reconstruction of roads and pavements, new surfaces in asphalt and paving, traffic signage, and landscaping, at a cost of almost CZK 40 million (excluding VAT). The Radvanice–Bartovice section, over 6 km long, will connect the city centre to routes towards Havířov and popular recreational areas, with construction costs exceeding CZK 13 million.

In addition to new construction, Ostrava is investing CZK 15 million this year in repairs to heavily used cycle routes. Recently renewed sections include parts of routes A, S, and F in several city districts.

Over recent years, Ostrava has invested hundreds of millions of crowns in cycle paths, including the architecturally striking Jan Balabán Footbridge by Josef Pleskot, linking the city centre with the Lower Vítkovice area.
