Ostrava celebrates 100 years of the Republic
This year, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia. This important historical jubilee is connected with 28 October 1918, when an independent Czechoslovak state was proclaimed. For the Czech Republic, this day is a public holiday and an occasion for celebrations and memorial events. A year-long project to honour this anniversary was also proclaimed by the City of Ostrava. It includes exhibitions, concerts, and lectures, events for children and adults, and publications.
One of the photographs of the “Century through Objective Lenses” project is a shot at Nádražní street in 1938.

This year is celebrated in the spirit of celebrations and reminders of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the independent Czechoslovak state. As part of the celebrations, the inhabitants of Ostrava are also commemorating other anniversaries coming this year. These are in particular the year 1938 in which mobilization took place, the signing of the Munich agreement on the withdrawal of the Czechoslovak borderlands to Germany, the year 1948 and the February events, the year 1968, and the August invasion of Warsaw Pact troops of Czechoslovakia. We also remember purely Ostrava’s anniversaries, such as 170 years of Ostrava City Hospital, 100 years of the Moravian-Silesian National Theatre and 90 years since the death of the composer Leoš Janáček.
To commemorate the significant anniversaries, the City announced subsidy programmes called “Ostrava 1918 – 2018” and “The 90th anniversary of the death of Czech composer Leoš Janáček”. They will support 21 projects for the anniversary of the Republic - exhibitions, concerts, lectures, events for children and adults and the printing of publications. Ninety years since the death of composer Leoš Janáček will be remembered by 11 projects supported by the City. These are theatrical performances, concerts, discussions, publications, CDs and photo exhibitions.
Hundreds of inhabitants of Ostrava who found interesting photos in their home archives capturing important events, street traffic, everyday life, celebrations or holidays, are involved in the “Century through Objective Lenses” project. The photos are being gradually published on the site ostrava100 and the best will be used in a publication that will reflect a hundred years of life in Ostrava.
