The 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship will be held in Ostrava and Třinec from 26 December 2019 to 5 January 2020. This will be the third time for the Czech Republic to host the Championship; Ostrava and Frýdek-Místek hosted the championship in 1994.

2020 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ostrava: only a year!

The IIHF World Junior Championship is considered to be one of the most prestigious ice hockey tournaments abroad, the NHL scouts consider it more important than the men's world championship.

"The fact that Ostrava will become the organizer gives credit to all those who have prepared sporting events at the highest level in the past, such as the men's Ice Hockey World Championship or the European Figure Skating Championship. I believe that we can once again provide the hockey players, officials, scouts and other representatives of NHL clubs with the best conditions. Spectators will see great matches of future hockey stars. It is a great chance to promote Ostrava. It only confirms that Ostrava is a genuine city of sport", said Mayor Tomáš Macura.

It is also important that the championship is not only an event that lasts a few days but also one that has a long-term effect. Such an event will always be of great interest to children and young people, and sports clubs are then experiencing a great increase in new members.

The upcoming championship is supported by the City of Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian Region, each contributing CZK 15 million.
