Ostrava is preparing for the second edition of the Emil Zátopek Golden Marathon, an event that honors the legendary Czech “Olympian of the Century.” Taking place on Saturday, October 25, at the Ostrava-Vítkovice City Stadium, this year’s race promises faster times on an even smoother course with minimal elevation gain.

The marathon will be part of a full day of running and sports activities, including the 13th annual Czech Women’s Run Ostrava, which has already attracted more than 15,000 participants since its founding. From children’s and family runs to team relays and the main marathon, a total of nine races will offer something for everyone. The start and finish will take place on the stadium’s track, a venue known for hosting the world’s top athletes. Visitors can also look forward to a rich program of workshops, concerts, and family activities.

The marathon has already made its mark on the international running scene. Last year’s winner, Kenyan runner Kennedy Ronoh, set a stellar time of 2:10:05, narrowly missing the 2:10 barrier. This year, he returns with the goal of breaking it, joined by a strong field of African athletes, including marathon debutant Godfrey Musamba. In the women’s race, Ethiopian runners Hirut Atsbeha and Workye Takele will aim for times under 2:30, while Ostrava’s own Petra Pastorová will represent the Czech elite.

The event will also welcome high-profile ambassadors, including British sprinting legend Colin Jackson, Olympic medalist Nikola Ogrodníková, middle-distance star Jakub Holuša, and Ostrava-born sprinter Pavel Maslák. Traditional ambassadors Alena Peterková and Karel David, Czech marathon record holders, will continue to support the race, alongside messages from current Czech record holder Moira Stewartová.

Ostrava’s mayor Jan Dohnal emphasized the importance of the event:
“The Emil Zátopek Golden Marathon offers not only world-class performances but also a chance for local residents to experience the thrill of running on the same track as professional athletes. It strengthens our city’s sporting tradition and celebrates the legacy of Emil Zátopek, who continues to inspire generations.”

Both the City of Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian Region support the event, which combines elite sport with opportunities for amateur athletes. Runners can register online at www.zatopekmaraton.cz. Early bird fees start at 850 CZK until September 30, and every participant will receive an official Macron race shirt and a finisher’s medal. Family runs and the accompanying program are free of charge.

The Emil Zátopek Golden Marathon is quickly becoming a highlight of the autumn running season in the Czech Republic – a celebration of sport, community, and the enduring spirit of one of the greatest athletes of all time.
