The Jindřich Mining Tower
The Mining Tower of the old Jindřich Mine still strikes an imposing figure in the centre of Ostrava. It is a symbolic reminder of the times when mining was still celebrated in the city. The last cartload of coal mined within the Ostrava city limits was taken up from the Odra Mine in 1994, marking the end of a gradual decline in mining begun in the area in the early 1990's. Mining towers and other industrial buildings began to disappear. The Jindřich mine had been founded in 1846 as a state-run company under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Soon after, it became the property of the Ferdinand Northern Railway. It was closed after World War Two.
In the first half of the 20th century, the centre of Ostrava was filled with mining towers and heaps of slag. Today, there are new buildings, parks and exhibition grounds. The old Jindřich Mining Tower remains as a reminder for future generations of what it was once like here.
The landmark is currently closed.
