The Nový Dvůr Arboretum
An oasis of tranquillity, natural beauty, and balsam for the soul is the Silesian Museum in Nový Dvůr, near Opava, located only 35 kilometres from Ostrava. The Arboretum contains a rich dendrological collection, a historical park, and a green house. Originally containing less than 400 tree species and strains in an area covering 1.5ha when it was created in 1958, the Arboretum has grown to contain more than 7 000 species covering an area of 23ha.

A walk around the park reveals tree species from all five continents. The Nový Dvůr arboretum cooperates with botanical gardens from around the world, to gather and exchange information and tree samples.

There are giant sequoias (Sequoia sempervirens), Arizona pines, primeval and curative ginkgo trees (Gingko biloba) and many others. Among the most unique samples are the Chinese metasequoia, known only from fossilized remains until 1943, when a 30m tree was discovered in the woods of Szechwan Province. The arboretum is famous for its beautiful rhododendrons, which were first planted in 1963. Later on, European firs were added, along with Japanese sacra trees (Prunes surrogate), apple trees, philadelphus bushes and others. The Arboretum is recognized for excellence throughout the Czech Republic and Europe.

The Arboretum also has a peat bog, a moor, sand dunes, American and Siberian flowers, Himalayan species and early-blooming trees. The greenhouse has a collection of approximately 2 000 succulents, trees and plants. The Arboretum is a great year round experience.
