The Johann Palisa Observatory and Planterium
It was founded in 1980 by the Technical University of Ostrava, known as Báňska. Surrounded by greenery, the observatory and planetarium building has the third largest planetarium hall with a diameter of 12,5 m, and the second largest projection instrument in the Czech Republic. The observatory and planetarium are open to all those interested in broadening their knowledge of space, and to those who just want to spend a relaxing time listening to music under a star-studded sky.

Here, visitors can see a number of programmes on various astronomical subjects designed for different age groups. Besides astronomical programmes, visitors can enjoy musical performances devoted, for example, to classical music or jazz. In the hall accommodating 100 people, some 9000 stars, planets and other space bodies are projected onto the artificial sky.

The visit to the observatory and planetarium can be complemented with viewing exhibitions in the MIRA Mini-gallery. Besides temporary exhibitions, the gallery houses a wall encyclopaedia, “Views of the Universe”. It consists of 14 large-size panels with texts and a multitude of photographs and pictures, acquainting visitors with astronomical themes, ranging from the most remote points in the Universe down to the Planet Earth. On the panels, visitors will find essential information about the subject, a description of observation methods, answers to frequent questions, the biography of the scientist, who takes the greatest credit for special knowledge in the particular area, a survey of important discoveries in the particular area and also a part called “Telescope”, where the subject depicted on the panel is explained illustratively to children.
