Project description
The past 20 years have brought a rapid rise in living standards for most of Ostrava’s people. This trend has also been reflected in the city’s traffic situation – especially in the number of cars owned by Ostrava’s citizens, which continues to increase every year. Currently there are just under 2 inhabitants per vehicle registered in the city. Traffic density has also risen in line with car ownership, causing increased levels of congestion. This in turn brings increased costs, which has a negative effect on the economic performance of the city and the region as a whole.
To address this situation, City Assembly members have decided to launch the pilot phase of the project ‘Intelligent Traffic Systems’. Systems of this type have been developed and implemented for many years in major European cities as well as in several countries in America and Asia (including the USA, Japan and China).
The pilot phase of the project ‘Intelligent Traffic Systems’ involves a navigation system which helps drivers to find vacant parking spaces in Ostrava city centre. During the pilot phase, engineers will also lay the foundations for the integration platform which will serve as a basis for future traffic systems to be implemented at a later date.
The integration platform will provide data for the central traffic engineering office (part of the road management company Ostravské Komunikace, a.s.). The parking information will also be available to the general public on the City of Ostrava’s traffic and transport portal www.doprava.ostrava.cz .
The pilot phase of project was completed in June 2010!!!
